River Ice Thickness Over 3 Feet In Middle Kuskokwim On February 22nd

The ice at Napaimute was 38 inches thick on February 22nd and 39 inches at Aniak.

This is an unusual year when people could, if they wanted to, drive from Tuntutuliak near the mouth of the Kuskokwim all the way to Crooked Creek – a distance of 260 miles*!  The reason is two-fold; the lack of snow and the numerous warm spells that we have experienced followed by more normal temperatures.

The 40-degree plus temperatures in January melted the ice and snow and that then refroze making much of that distance like a giant ice skating rink.

Many people have made the trip from Aniak to Bethel, or vice versa, in 2 to 2 1/2 hours.   Some folks from Bethel drove up to Aniak for the boy’s and girl’s basketball game this past weekend between Aniak and Bethel.

* We are currently experiencing the 5th warm spell of the winter, so there is some overflow in places so please be careful.
