The Kuskokwim Salmon Management Working Group met in Anchorage April 3rd and 4th to discuss the upcoming king salmon season. Last year the Kuskokwim River experienced its lowest run of kings on record, and 2014 is expected to be very similar. In both 2010 and 2013 the desired lower bound of the drainage-wide escapement level of 65,000 kings was not met, and it was barely exceeded in 2011 and 2012.
Consequently, the Working Group supports drastic conservation measures, and those measures were recently highlighted in KYUK and KTUU news broadcasts.
